The perils of a freeze
It happened. In just a few hours. With a lovely, full bud set on all of our fruit trees, a cold, still night killed the fruit buds. Yes, it’s devastating and heartbreaking that a few wee hours in a night can wipe out a year’s worth of planning and cultivation.
Unlike row crops, orchards can’t replant or make the trees rebloom within the one-year season. The fruit buds get one shot each spring to bloom and survive into a piece of fruit. This just wasn’t the year for apricots, cherries, plums, nectarines, nor peaches. We have a very few pears and apples.
Pictured you’ll be able to see the cherries, blackened by a freeze. Therefore, we won’t have a vibrant fruit season like we planned and hoped for. Stay tuned in September for the possibility of pears and apples.
